Here are a few things we like in Memphis.
The National Civil Rights Museum
The Lorraine Motel was the site of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968. In his honor, Memphis erected the National Civil Rights Museum around the motel. The museum is divided among several historic sites in the area, including the Young and Morrow building where James Earl Ray confessed. Its exhibits trace the history of the civil rights movement in America.
One of the museum exhibits is a bus representative of the Montgomery Bus Boycott where Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. A recent addition to the museum is a replica of a U.S. Supreme Court room where Brown v. Board of Education was heard.
Graceland is a mansion formerly owned by Elvis Presley that attracts over 650,000 visitors per year. It is located at 3765 Elvis Presley Boulevard in the neighborhood of Whitehaven. It was opened to the public in June of 1982. On March 27, 2006 Graceland was declared a National Historic Landmark.
Every year Graceland holds Elvis Week from August 11-17, the anniversary of his death. Elvis Week includes live performances honoring Elvis Presley’s music and movie appearances, tours of Graceland, panel discussions with people who knew Elvis personally, and a candlelight vigil during which fans pay their respects to Elvis.
Memphis in May
The World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest is part of the Memphis in May International Festival that honors a different country each year. The WCBCC is the largest pork barbeque contest in the world. It lasts three to four days. More than 250 teams from over 20 countries compete for prizes ranging from 300 to 15,000 dollars in several categories. Special events include Ms. Piggie (in which teams dress up as pigs and perform skits) and sauce wrestling. Teams send one of their own to wrestle in 40 gallons of barbeque sauce.
Memphis in May also includes the Beale Street Music Festival. This is a three-day music festival held in Tom Lee Park. Historically, Beale Street was where African-Americans from all over the South would gather to perform music together.
