What we love about Detroit is what the city has offered to the world. Not only is Detroit notably the birthplace of the automobile in America, but the city is also responsible for the creation of Motown and techno music. Some Hip-hop artists, like Eminem, who have majorly influenced the music industry are also from Detroit. There’s a lot of creativity and innovation here!

North American International Auto Show

As the home of the model-T Ford, Detroit hosts the North American International Auto Show. The turnout rate for this show each year is about 800,000 people.

This is a huge preview and awards show for updated or new model cars. Two awards are presented at the event: The EyesOn Design award for Design Excellence and the Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year award. Awards from the show greatly influence a vehicle’s success on the market. The show has been held at TCF Center since 1965.

The Birthplace of Motown Music

Detroit is the birthplace of Motown music. The name “Motown” is a formation of the two words “motor town”, a nickname for Detroit.

Motown music is credited to Detroit due to Berry Gordy, Jr., the founder of Motown Records. Berry Gordy, Jr. formerly lived in the Motown Mansion in the Boston-Edison District. The Mansion is not open to the public yet but people drive by the mansion every day as it is an inspiration to Detroit citizens and tourists.

A Rich Musical Heritage

In the 1940s, John Lee Hooker brought the Blues to Detroit from Mississippi. The city became a major producer of jazz in the 50s. In the 60s and 70s, Motown music came alive.

Formed in 1964, the countercultural MC5 played their mix of garage rock and early punk. They would go on to influence countless musicians in the punk and alternative scenes.

In the 80s, Techno music was created in Detroit. Is it any wonder that the backdrop of industrial sounds combined with a futuristic vision to create a new genre?

To honor Detroit’s musical heritage, events in the city include the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Movement Electronic Music Festival, the Motor City Music Conference (MC2), the Concert of Colors, and the hip-hop Summer Jamz festival.
