Here are some of the local attractions we love about Albuquerque.

The Sandia Mountains

The Sandia Mountains are a perfect hiking and mountain biking destination. Or you can ride the Sandia Peak Tramway to the top of the 10,378-foot peak and enjoy the view. “Sandia” means watermelon and the mountains are named this for their pink and green colors visible at sunset. On average, you can catch a beautiful sunny day in Albuquerque 278 days out of the year.

The International Balloon Fiesta

Every year in early October the city hosts the International Balloon Fiesta. This is a stunning display of hundreds of colorful hot-air balloons against a bright, crystal sky. It is held the first week of October at Balloon Fiesta Park.  Because of the sunny weather and this annual tradition, hot-air balloon rides are an economic resource for Albuquerque. Balloon Fiesta Park is also a great place to play golf.

Traditional Food

One of the reasons to visit or live in Albuquerque is the food. It’s authentic. New Mexican cuisine is a blend of Native American corn and squash, European pork and beans, and the local red and green chile peppers that are grown and harvested around the Rio Grande. From frybread and posole to stacked green chile enchiladas, there’s a lot of culture and spice in local dishes. The food is so important here that there is even a state cookie. It is anise-flavored and called biscochito.

Pueblo-Revival Architecture

What gives Albuquerque that Wild West feel is the Pueblo-Revival style architecture inspired by the Pueblo indians. Even the University of New Mexico’s campus buildings employ this architectural theme. It’s an example of the importance of culture here.

Fairs, Conventions, Concerts, and Comics!

The New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair has been held in Albuquerque since 1961 and draws hundreds of local artisans every summer. Other fun things to do here include visiting resort casinos and catching live shows.  The Albuquerque Convention Center is a huge venue for international music concerts, travelling shows, local music performances and the Albuquerque Comic-Con. And as for shopping, the Coronado Center shopping mall in Northeast Albuquerque is the largest in New Mexico with 130 stores. It’s no surprise there is a lot to do outdoors with such perfect weather year round to enjoy. A cloudy overcast never lasts longer than a couple of days here, if it occurs at all.
