History of Atlanta

Atlanta and the Atlanta metropolitan area is home to over six million people, making it the ninth largest metropolitan area in the nation. Atlanta began as a railroad town between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Savannah, Georgia. Today it continues to hold a reputation as a transportation hub, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport being one of the busiest in the world.

Atlanta has a history of upheaval and change that attests to its reputation. The city was destroyed during the Civil War but rebuilt itself even better than it was before. Just as it’s dominant economic sectors are logistics and transportation, the city continues to be a place of transition, growth, prosperity, and change. Today it is home to several Fortune 500 companies.

Higher Education

Atlanta is home to 19 public and private colleges in the region. The most prominent of these include Georgia Tech, Emory University, and Georgia State University. Georgia Tech is a public research university in Midtown. Emory University is a notable liberal arts and research university that institutes Emory Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in Georgia. Georgia State University has the largest student population in Downtown Atlanta.

Although you may have heard of the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, or the Atlanta Falcons, you may not have known that running and cycling are important athletics in Atlanta. Atlanta calls itself “Running City USA.” The Peachtree Road Race is the world’s largest 10K road race held on Independence Day in Atlanta. Over 60,000 people register for this race each year. The race has been attracting some of the world’s elite runners since 1970. Registration takes three months. Post-race festivities are held at Piedmont Park.

Due to the abundance of trees, which is rare for such a large city, Atlanta it is known as “The City in a Forest.” Each spring, Atlanta celebrates this title with the Atlanta Dogwood Festival. This is an arts and crafts festival held in early April at Piedmont Park. Other nicknames for Atlanta include “Hotlanta,” “The Gate City,” and “Hollywood of the South.”
